« Does the Child have a Sexual Self? | Main | To 'The Friend' »
Within us all, lies an inveterate dreamer. No matter how sordid our situation or self-perception maybe, there is also present that strange self which rises with élan now and again and whispers to us that we can vanquish our demons, go the extra mile, raise the bar of our tolerance, joie de vivre and patience. The self which helps us fantasize right into the skin of a Bill Gates, tick in the pulse of a Diva, just ‘know’ the manic intensity of a Picasso or sway in sync with the self-fuelled ardour of a Michael Jackson. This self, in complete contrast to what/who/where we maybe in real life, creates a reel life in our head of infinite potential. Not one living human lacks this self.
Fascinating universality this! That unique and yet common to every man, kind of self whom we all know and yet do not. Perhaps largely because it makes us feel unsure, maybe untrusting and suspicious of its grand delusions. And yet no matter how much we elbow it to a side, rationalists and dreamers alike, we never seem to lose its haunting musk. Interesting word this musk and I use it deliberately, for it is indeed metaphoric of the musk deer, whose very own navel carries the elusive fragrance that the deer seems to obsess in searching all around, often through miles of turgid forest …while the source of the fragrance seems to neither appear nor disappear. Tucked away safely if you will, awaiting discovery!
This post was born as I watched the jubilee celebrations of Art of Living at Bangalore. Two and half million people converged across nations, religions, regions, class, language and caste. At the centre stood the synergizing force, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, a new age Guru! Someone I knew travelled all the way from Pakistan ( at 70) to attend, along with 30 largely young, curious minds willing to brave the sea of crowds to watch ‘Guruji’ at work. The media true to its tone covered the event extensively and CNN/IBN even ran a ‘sceptics’ talk show on Indian Gurudom. World Peace was the unambiguous objective, inner sanctum the fuelling force, meditation (especially breathing kriyas) the tool and compassion, unified consciousness and love and lightness a collective intent. For me, the wonder was the remarkable convergence of collective consciousness on the high road of intention. Iraq, Iran, Bush, Bin Laden, Nuclear deals and terrorism seemed to have paled as hope, light, human aspiration and 142 countries folks swayed to Carnatic music, Shiva Chants, Om recitations and impassioned speeches seeking inner ‘godliness’ as human and global options.
That’s when the phrase ‘warriors of light’ began to hum in my brain. Another man far away in the U.S writes astonishing books on everything under the sun from the Wild Divine, To Ageless Body and Timeless Mind. He has scaled the most enviable power cliques in the world and gets many world ‘leaders’ to hear him talk of peace, forgiveness, human connectivity and intelligent design. His primary tour de force now is the ‘Alliance for the New Humanity’ where bringing resolution to the table of difference is being tried in creative, humane, one-spirit and meditative- bliss- resonance kind of way. His recent book ‘Peace Is The Way’ won him accolades, awards and bestseller monies. He is now scripting a path breaking film on Buddha with the intent that ; ‘A teenage girl in Memphis should see it and be inspired to seek enlightenment’. Tall order! Not for Dr Deepak Chopra who tirelessly transforms the sage, Vedantic Guru, spiritual seer footprints and battles his numerous critics to race on as the New Age icon for ‘wholeness’.
Truly a whole new world of mystic/warrior/godman/healer has become centre stage with quite a difference. With your sceptic brain screeching ‘con man’ there is little hope to actually spot the new scenario. And new it is indeed! Customized, for not only the modern brain but the more scientific wish list of ‘wholesome and healthy’ living. Shorn of saffron, long-locked formal wear, the new mystics are indeed battling the current of apathy, doom, violence and nihilism. Abundance, ‘play’, creative co-existence is their unambiguous raison d’etre and God, Nirvana etc are the back burners.
And pointing to your musk is their simple one-point agenda! Nombrilisme- a philosophic French term means ‘contemplate your navel’. Warriors of light stand tall and show you how!

Good Morning Jasjit
wonderful post and love the title. Like Aachi says You are the resident Warrior of Light. Love the musk analogy and what you say is spot on. There's a new age guru right here in Gurgaon called Vikas Malkani, got to hear him as a corporate inspiraational speaker-spot on about modernity, simplicity and inner strength.
Just a few days ago an Uncle sent me a mail on SS Ravishankar asking me whether he was genuine or a con man. Am going to send him your piece. Frankly I think it should be posted in the New York Times.
Love & Hats off!

Dear Jasjit,
Good Morning!
Inspiring indeed!! Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, Dr. Deepak Chopra, Swami Ramdev .... its amazing to see the kind of following they have. I think every child knows Swami Ramdev now!! I am left speechless every time I see him on Aastha channel, at his shivirs, the hundreds and thousands of people that come to attend them. He has made Yoga and Pranayam a common thing and it is quite an achievement to get through to the so called 'scientific' and 'logical' minds of today. I guess the reason is that these Gurus talk in our language, a language that we understand. Many salutations to them!
And its so true that the Warriors of Light like them are here to introduce us to the Warrior of Light within each one of us. The question is "are we looking?"
A very Good Morning to everyone! :-)

Dear Jasjit
What a simple, eloquent and profound post. Loved the metaphor of the musk deer. How true that what we search for lies with us but we are so oblivious to it that we spend our entire lives running around looking for that special something. Thank you for that beautiful reminder and like Aachi said, for being our warrior of light.
lots of love

Yes Jasjit that is so true, that self which every now and then pops up in our head and tells us the potential that lies within us. But we just suppress that self because we are scared that if we follow that self then we will have to first lay bare the self with which we are living with. Sounds confusing right. But thats exactly how the head feels- confused.
It's this confusion that we fear. I have this confusion, fear so often. So intense is this fear that in order to rid myself of it I block the self that tries to show me my potential and the potential of the environment (my family, my work space) that I'm in.
There are so many Warriors of Light around me/us but why the resistance?

hello Jasjit,
Your msgs always leave behind so much to think and ponder that I often willingly submerge into several layers of thought threaded thru each line of your article...Till my mind races and my finger race faster than my mind.
If there was anything called procation for enlightenment then, it is this, it is this, it is this... blog...
while speaking of gurus and leaders, I have to share one thing that it's such an oxymoron that we all are aware of that hidden power, that light within us but yet we need another person to show it to us...
Whenever I try to remember my face I can't recall it... but every day so many times I see myself in the mirror... it's so strange. I can't even recall how I look in a photograph, but I know millions of face by now... and even the names...
We go to the gurus and they tell us that we have an inner light. Yet before going to them, many of us didn't accept it. Call them skeptical or practical they have very little belief in old scriptures. Yet when new age gurus sell the same old story in a new fashion people cling to that hope to see the inner light...
There was a joke, -- if you have a problem with my face then that's your problem, I'm anyway behind it. I guess what the guru does is, just hold a mirror in our face.
when there is no guru, there is life, there is mishaps, there are friends and foes who bring out the suppressed life force out when we are cornered and suddenly we scream from inside our souls, "I deserve more than this. I have and I am more that what I deserve."
I have never been to any guru. Life, mine own, and being a keen obeserver, the lives of others around me have been my guru to teach me to keep that flame burning all the time.... the key is not to have it raging furiously all the time. IT will be ehausted... Just let it be there as it shines thru your eyes.
When you need it the most, when the nights are darkest and the days are coldest just increase the flame... There is a song in bangla that millions of stars could not light up the sky... but a little diya can show a light to the lost traveller.... that's the flame....
I loved the metaphor or "Musk". I see myself as a tennis ball. everytime I was thrown I bounced back. And the harder life threw me the faster I came back with a tremendous force. That's my hidden light... that I gainedfrom myself.
'Aham Brahmasmi'...
I didn't get it from any god or guru, but from simple people like you guys, my friends, neighbours, family, my granny, my parents, the simple village folk I met in my N number of travels to the hills, the difficult life that endangered sepcies of animals are living thru-out the world.
And children who with their innocent remarks and scathing truth have made me see life with zest....and jest....
some people often ask me, "why do you smile all the time? Even when you are sad or in problems. I have no answer... will they understand if I say "I have raised the flame a bit higher."
I find all this so funny, when I know that the wheel of fortune will turn.

As my name goes I love humming... a friend once called me the "humming bird" cause my nick name is TOTA(I talk a lot, no kidding I really do).
I would share my favorite hum song with you. Each word of this song has been written for me and all the dreamers, who walk a few inches above ground.
:-) to all of you my friends, dream on...
--------------------------
I have a dream, a song to sing
To help me cope with anything
If you see the wonder of a fairy tale
You can take the future even if you fail
I believe in angels
Something good in everything I see
I believe in angels
When I know the time is right for me
I'll cross the stream - I have a dream
I have a dream, a fantasy
To help me through reality
And my destination makes it worth the while
Pushing through the darkness still another mile
I believe in angels
Something good in everything I see
I believe in angels
When I know the time is right for me
I'll cross the stream - I have a dream
--------------
good night
sleep tight
don't let the bed bug bite
(bite it back instead)

Dear Chaitali
It is just what they call of the dance of the dark and the light within us. The mind pulls us to stoke the ways of our ego and the heart warms to the light of its inner wisdom. Split we feel schizoid and lost warring within for what is nothing but shadow boxing.

Dear Sangeeta
Your words are wise and deep. The Guru is none other but the mirror self in manifest form, stoic like a signpost, eternal like the winds of Grace. His/her only purpose being that we do not wane in our illusory wars that which is essential and true. If today someone were to ask me why a Guru- I would simply say to prove to my once doubting mind the truth of the dance of the Divine.
Indeed the final/ultimate Guru is within and all true Gurus really lead us exactly there where none is then needed for you have become one with All. Unfortunately few can find that high road without the intervention of a Guru for the maze of illusion is thick and often circuitous.
And humming bird indeed your favourite song is also the Way. :-) Do believe in angels for you too are one with them.

Sangeeta Jasjit,
Everybody around us needs to be valued. This is one message that I have been receiving through different incidents in my life. I have seen it happening often. Whenever I start taking people for granted, or not seeing the value that they bring to my life something out of the ordinary happens. This is life's way of telling me that I need to look around me.

Hello Friends - Jasjit, Venkat & Radhika, Aachi, Shubhosree, Anusheh, Chaitali, Preethi :-)
Coming back and reading this post again, I recall that I used to talk to myself, Questioning my own actions; Anylyzing within as an outsider, and then felt like standing up to just go ahead and do what I felt like doing.
You guys have confirmed in clear words that every soul, every heart has a guiding light - within.
Hey Sangeeta, Shubhosree:
Two chirpy, free-spirited people quoting 'Ahm Brahmasmi'. You guys could be good friends or (may be you already are :-? ).
Great to see this community flourishing in ways.
Take care all :)

Am tempted to quote from the Bhagwad Geeta (Ch 4.7)
"Yada yada hi dharmasya glanir bhavati bharata, abhuytthanam adharmasya tadatmanam srijamyaham"
[Whenever and wherever dharma declines and adharma(unrighteousness; irreligion) prevails, at that time, O Bharata (Arjuna), I come to birth]
