This is something I heard from a colleague. She was a small town girl who sang this Punjabi number written for the urban woman living in the Metros. In other words -- Uptown girls... I thought with the rising debate over "Who is today's woman?" I would share this extreme point of view of generalising and certifying the "typical urban woman."
For those who can't understand Punjabi or Hindi there is an English version as well.
Ajkal diyan kuriyan very very smart, Ajkal diyan kuriyan,
Wo pant vi paan di hain, skirt vi paan di hain,
Skirt vi paan di hain, very very “SHORT”, Ajkal diyan kuriyan.
Ajkal diyan kuriyan very very smart, Ajkal diyan kuriyan,
Wo rum vi peen di hain, whiskey vi peen di hain,
whiskey vi peen di hain, very very “NEAT”, Ajkal diyan kuriyan.
Ajkal diyan kuriyan very very smart, Ajkal diyan kuriyan,
Wo disco vi jaun di hain, movie vi jaun di hain,
movie vi jaun di hain, very very “BLUE”, Ajkal diyan kuriyan.
Ajkal diyan kuriyan very very smart, Ajkal diyan kuriyan,
Wo panga vi len di hain, chumma vi len di hain,
chumma vi len di hain, very very “HOT”, Ajkal diyan kuriyan.
Translated
Today’s girls are very very smart, today’s girls
They wear pants and they wear skirts
They wear skirts, very very “SHORT”, today’s girls
Today’s girls are very very smart, today’s girls
They drink rum and they drink whiskey,
They drink whiskey, very very “NEAT”, today’s girls
Today’s girls are very very smart, today’s girls
They go to disco and they go to movies,
They go to movies, very very “BLUE”, today’s girls
Today’s girls are very very smart, today’s girls
They take dares and they take kisses,
They take kisses, very very “HOT”, today’s girls

Hi Princess Batcheet,
The song that you have mentioned here has been composed by students of XLRI. (XL Ki kudiyan was originally composed by Rohit Munjal, XLer 2003 batch)

You can just search on google by "XL ki kudiyan" and then downlaod the song.
I am sorry to say but your small town girl seems to have sadly plagarised the song.

Dear Chet,
Thanks for the link.
I heard this song way back in 1996, while working in Delhi. About 8 yrs before XL guys composed it. I guess he must be in school then.
I never met that girl after I changed my job in 2000. She belonged to Patiala and on a lohri holiday she heard that folksong and came back to narrate it to us.
It is based on a folk song, which has different lyrics in Punjabi. Maybe the XLRI guys just created a spoof around it. Source of inspiration is same.
The same way as "De de pyar de" by Bappida is a copy of a Bangla folk song "Allah megh de". "subah subah jab khirki khole baju wali larki" is from "o nanadi ar du mutho chal phelede harite"... "yaar bina chain kahan re"... is from "je jon premer bhab janena, tar sone nai lena dena",.... and the list goes on & on....
We cannot say they plagiarised. Can we? folk tunes are for everyone to lift and use.
Or if you believe in Deja vu, great minds thought alike. Only Harpreet thought of it about 8 yrs before Mr.Rohit Munjal...Naturally the rights of plagirising from a folk song goes to her.
:-)
cheers

Hi Princess,
Nice to read your reply, though after a very long wait. I agree with you that the XLRI guys must have also picked up the song from somewhere or got inspired by someone.
It was just that I have been listening to this song often and when I read the lyrics in your article I was struck by the uncanny similarity in the 2 songs.
Nevertheless I appreciate the fact that songs are meant to be an inspiration especially when it is as cool as this one.
Cheers,
Chet
