The Hole of Fear

By Aachi Mithin - 1:40 PM Wednesday 13 September 2006

Chronicled in a 4 part series is an amazing experience I had 30 kms from Bangalore, last year. I visited a stunning place unknown to majority. And I was faced with a choice to make that chilled my spine to the very root of bone............. a choice about The Hole Of Fear…

The Hole of Fear (Prologue)

"Come on!" urged the drunkard Kempanna.

He motioned towards the dark crevice in the depths of the cave.

There was a glint of a smile on his dirty teeth. His breath smelt of cheap toddy. His eyes danced in mocking mirth. He had motioned the Traveler to go deeper into the cave.

"There!' he exclaimed suddenly stopping the Traveler in his tracks.

He pointed at something on the ground. The Traveler followed his gaze and froze to see something he had dreaded to see throughout his trek in the thick jungles of the hill. Something that scared him to the very root of bone. Something that mocked an ancient sense of self- preservation in him.

Cut beautifully in the thick rock of the cave in the innermost core was a dark, menacing snake hole.....

There was no doubt in the Traveler’s mind that a King of snakes lay slithering in the darker bosom of the hole.

He had seen the King Cobra protected with thick meshes of a cage in the zoo park. He wondered whether he would for the first time bump into the famed snake at close quarters of two feet…. with no thick meshes of a cage to protect him.

But what followed next was something unimaginable. Something terrifying............

The Dreams of the Hill ( Chapter 1 The Hole of Fear)

Exactly a week ago before the Traveler found himself staring at a huge snake hole at two thousand five hundred feet above sea level on a mountain in a cave deep in its bosom, he was riding in a bus.

The bus was going towards his hometown.

He was dreaming. He dreamt of a huge mountain amongst the hills. The mountain was like a huge Shiva ling. The hills were dark, the mountain was silver. He dreamt of walking up to the mountain. He dreamt of a huge alien mansion. And of dungeons and pain. He dreamt of the Hole of Fear and something glistening in it...

The Traveler woke up with a start. He was perspiring. He could make out palpitations in his chest. He looked around the Volvo bus. Everyone was sleeping.

It was a dream, he assured himself.

He yawned basking in the rays of the sun in the chilly afternoon. His gaze fell on something outside the window. And his heart skipped a beat.

It was a mountain.

Solitary. Beautiful.

It was shaped like a huge ling. It appeared to be a sacred mountain. It was a huge behemoth of rock shaped like a Shiva ling standing on a 2500 ft pedestal. It was beckoning him…. It knew him….

It was the mountain he immediately recognized as the one he saw in his dream!

What was there on it?

Then he remembered the Hole of Fear and shuddered a little. What was that glistening thing he had seen in it?

Come what may, I will climb that mountain and discover its secret he assured himself.

A week after that the Traveler found himself seated in a taxi running through the early morning fog of the city towards the same mountain thirty kilometers away.

He looked at the silhouette of the mountain far away.

It knows I am coming, he told himself.

The Hole of Fear too, he thought, knew of his coming...

Hi guys,

I am just checking my story writing capabilities. I am recounting with a touch of melodrama my visit to a place near Bangalore. It is a stunning mountain shaped like a huge 5000 ft of Shiva Ling, infested with cobras and monkeys.

There at the top of nearly 2500 ft , I had to make the most scariest decision of my life.

It was a decision about the Hole of Fear...

Well Aachi there is no doubt that you are the next best selling thriller and suspense writer in town!

Dark holes are really fascinating especially becasue we don't know what really lies in them and it is this unknown that draws us to them. I remember when I used to go for my holidays to Calcutta and sit on the broken wooden stairs leading to the backdoor pond at my granny's place, I used to notice the big and small holes which lined muddy boundary of the pond. I used to sit and imagine what sort of animals might be living in them. I used to wait all afternoons waitng to see what emerged or went into those holes. But I was never able to spot anything. Still every year that I went they would not stop fascinating me. There would be a sense of excitement to find out what was there inside as well as fear of what lies inside the holes!

Dear Chaitali,

Thanks a lot. :)

The unknown intrigues and chills. I had never encountered a dark hole in all my life previous to that. As I stood in front of it and waited with bated breath I imagined the worst possible scenarios. But the one that happened was probably the scariest.

Am posting the second and third parts now...

Dear Aachi, perhaps the Mountain you dreamt of was none other than the illustrious Sri Arunachala in Thiruvannamalai...well-known as the largest ShivLing in the world and the oldest geological hill on Earth and said to be the manifestation of Lord Shiva himself aeons ago, hope this helps ..;)

Dear Arunachala,

You might be right. I tried in vain to go and see the great mountain of Arunachala earlier this month. But couldnt...I was just 150 km from it.

I havent seen it...waiting for the moment I will set my eyes on it.

Hope to see you more on the site.

:)
