Hi Annie, that were really gr8 share.... I felt so good to here that most people fear spiders.
I used to think I am only from a few (like Garfield) who suffer from arachnophobia.

Hi Guys!
Annie & Sangeeta- way to go! Annie I am trying to lick my elbow & I promise you I am going to get there.
Well I want to talk about a film I saw last night called CRASH- yup the best film at the Oscars. Well this is what I have to say:
U.S is in deep- nose-high in shit. They are sitting on a tinder box of racial anger which is going to blow up in a big bad way. so hey where do they get off telling other countries how to run thier nations? I mean they have no moral stand and what if anyone of these really pissed off 'black' groups decide to steal their nuke toys and let the whole world have it? White rap by the Bush Band aint fooling no one- at least not in his own country. Now we know why Katrina was such a massive tragedy.
Well the film is watchable with excellent editing as its high point. Radhika feels the ending was unsubtle and wimpy. I'm no expert on subtlety so I pass that one- but the end definitely wasn't powerful. However its a non-hysterical insight into a pretty hysterical reality. So go watch!
Would love to hear what others think.

Hi Annie, Sangeeta & Venkat
Annie I'm hooked on your tongue twister and while I'm not interested in the taste of my elbow, I am going to try and crack this one. :-)
Sangeeta nice redefining!
Venkat
Saw Crash and share your views and concerns. Have to also say Radhika is spot on about the subtlety going awry, especially towards the end of the film. I mean suddenly Sandra Bullock had to grab the Hispanic maid to her bosom as her long lost friend just because she was the only available ride to the hospital, was over the top. A bit hindi filmy change of heart don't you think?
I did like the subtley of 'shades of gray' in all peoples of all colours- kind of thing but then the director got a bit tizzy in tying up his own tale. Yes siree the editing was world class and without that the film could have been more bumpy than it actually was.
However the thing that scared me most was as all the cross racial webs were being woven I realized that as a culture there was no generic saftey net of compassion, spiritual wisdom, tolerance etc for the tinder-box (aptly put) to be diffused. The emotional/spiritual aridity came through so starkly and I wonder if the U.S of A realizes that India-exports such massive wisdom (through all the Gurus we regularly send their way)to that land mass as the one true pillar that may help in stemming the staggering violence brewing in their society.
I mean a nation whose history has the vilest stories of human bondage and slavery even as recent as early last century, where will they draw strength and sustenance from in the face of civil violence? And the only nation to have actually detonated a nuclear bomb against another nation and its civilians jet-sets through the world prattling on 'nuclear responsibility' rather than diffusion. It is scary Venkat, very scary that Bushspeak still exists in a world where he is the worst example of American muscle-flexing, arrogance and myopia.
Though was it 'best film' material at the Oscars- I'm not sure!
Posted by
Hey Venkat, Jasjit
Haven't seen the movie. But one thing about many of the US movies is that they are around hysteria, fear, being paranoid that other nations are going to steal their nuke, their military plans; that even aliens, pre-historic animals, genetically mutant animals, ghosts are going to take over, destroy their 'their' world.
Not to say that there aren't good, meaningful and enternaining movies but the movies that are blockbuster hits are mostly based on fear. I guess that speaks in itself about their society.
Annie you have given us all weekend homework!

Good Point Chaitali
Fear is the key! And you are right from King Kong to 'The Demonic Leg' are the celluloid ways of publicly airing mass-hysteria. Spiders, possessed bean sprouts, sharks, bugs, evil children and haunted houses perhaps make up more than 50 per cent of what Hollywood churns out. Amazing comment on the fear levels of a nation which chest-beats about being the first world. Maybe we need to design and export a movement for them called 'reality check'. :-)
Posted by
Sangeeta,
That was really beautiful. I like the first one the best :)
Jasjit, Venkat, Chaitali
Don't forget the 'The Attack of The Killer Tomatoes'
Posted by
Excellent Annie. Thank you. However, I almost twisted my arm and finally gave up....:)
I really liked Crash but agree with Jasjit about the melodrama part( sandra bullock and the maid.
Watch Syriana. A wonderful movies. It is about the games US plays in the middle east. If you have watched and loved Hotel Rwanda (another brilliant one on the first world politics) you should not miss this one..
Posted by on March 18, 2006 05:07 PM
Possesed bean sprouts was really funny Jasjit. Yup, Crash was unsubtle at many levels an almost 'sweet' desire by the makers to see the 'humane' face of racism. I mean they had no Indians or Pakistanis to share their tales so just imagine what it must be like for the Surds with turbans, the Guju auties in sarees, the muslims with skull caps et al.
What is amazing is that all the above go searching the American dream in droves still.
Ramlath saw Syriana & you'r right -very distressing & well done. The point is with films like these & 9/11, Crash etc what are Americans doing re-electing Bush? O.k Jasjit go for the 'reality check' movement , we will all pitch in!
Has anyone seen Brokeback Mountain? My response- what was Ang Lee thinking???
Posted by
Sangeeta & Annie
Good ones! Sangeeta they deserve to be framed in prominent spots so I'm forwarding to all who will benefit.
:-]

Hi Radhika
What was Ang Lee thinking is right? I mean the poor guy tried to be different so we'll give him points for that. But really I have never seen a film with such flat characters and complete poverty of emotional depth.
Posted by
I totally agree Anusheh. And the best director's trophy went to brokeback!! It was quite a boring movie.

Good Morning everyone!
Sorry guys, havent been able to come on the blog for the past 2 days, have been a little under the weather. Missed you all ...
Have a great day all you lovely people :-)
Sangeeta, that was beautiful, simply enjoyed it :-)

Hello Everyone :),
Hey Shubhosree, Good to see you back :-). Hope you're over the weather now :).
Take care.
Dear Annie,
That tongue twister really twisted my tongue pal! Some versions that came out early on:
1. sixth sheik's sick sheep ...
2. sixth sick seikh (instead of s*h*eikh) ...
3. sixth shick sheikh's sixth ... (realized at the end that the second word got messed up)
Though I finally got it.
And about the elbow, is it even possible for a 'normal human'?
(yeah yeah ... I tried it too ;-) - but I got really close ok)
Must say 't was all fun. :-)

Hi Guys,

- After all is said and done, more is said than done
- Alcohol is not the answer, it just makes you forget the question.
- All true wisdom is found on T-shirts.
- As long as there are tests, there will be prayer in public schools.

- Bad spellers of the world untie!

Hi Surya and Shubz
Good to see you guys. That was really funny Surya, thanks. By the way Annie I am convinced that the elbow will happen:)

Yeah gals Brokeback was one mystifying Oscar heist. I actually forced myself to sit through the end waiting for the great hype to explain itself . But apart from some great cinematography moments- more to the credit of Wyoming than Ang Lee - the film just dragged.
Thing is that the reviews call it the great 'hat ke' gay film and you just walk away with a massive yawn. I guess the 'hat ke' was that cowboys can be gay! A John Wayne moveover kinda thing.
I wish more people posted their views on it, would be fun to read. BTW why is the blog so quiet suddenly. Prasun, Surya, Rajiv, Madhavi, Sukanya, Sangeeta, Harvinder- where is everyone?

Ok Guys don't Trash "Crash" yet.
Yes there is racism in the USA, but puhllleeease, LA is not as shown in the movie, I have lived there for 7 years. Not once did I or my very dark skinneed husband or daughter, were subjected to racial slurs or any other form of discrimination.
In fact after our return to India (now with a added member, very fair skinned and grey blue eyed son)my still very young daughter faced worse kind of colour bias ever, esp now that we had this lad who was an anti thesis to her colour.
Tchhhh, lets not point fingers when ours are pretty badly marred.
Just to reteriate my point. My husband N, decided to go out for a drink with a friend at a popular upscale bar in Bombay. At the entrance they were told that sorry we cannot let you in as no stags are allowed at the bar counter.
Well, its a private bar, no problem, that is their policy, but of course what was discriminating was the fact that there were some foreigners sitting alone by the bar as were some bollywood starlets(single males all)On questioning the management about "THEM" he was informed, well sir they are our priveleged guests.....ho hum, so needless to say that bar has since been blacklisted by my husband and his friend.
Well honestly, i could sight millions of incidences of racial disparity at home, by our own people but let it suffice to say that we should surely look within our ownselves. Fair and dark, Brahmins and untouchables, etc etc etc etc

Hi Surjo,

Dear Annie,
Enjoyed reading the amazing facts.Imagine the tongue being the strongest muscle in your body !!! And I did try to lick my elbow :-))

Dear Sunrise
Welcome to the group of elbow lickers:)

Hi Madhavi
Good to see you back. Absolutely true that we Indians have our own brand of racism. And your story is just one of many home-grown white/black responses that we have. However I think personally racism has a totally different scale and implications there because the history of slavery is a legacy which cannot be wiped away. In effect it acts as a starting point to all.
Also like I said earlier civil tensions there are more scary because the only God which truly proliferates there is manna. Compassion, serving others, tolerance for the aged, underprivileged, generosity etc are not woven into the history or culture. This makes for sharp angularities which can blow up in intense ways. we on the other hand can survive riots repeatedly, even the Babri Masjid scale of communal violence, terrorism and incensed states such as Assam, punjab and J& K. There is a continum in us which dates back through time and acceptance, digestion and ressurection is replete.
So yes, Crash has its merits as we all have stated. However the melodrama et al just weakened it somewhat as a story I feel

Well tried everybody! Elbow licking seems to have kept you guys busy!
Surya,
Congrats you managed to get the tongue twister!!
Hey liked your one liners also. Especially the one saying bad spellers of the world untie!
Sunrise, try try try again :)
Looks like I've got to see this movie Crash. Madhavi, Jasjit I might be wrong but I think the difference in the type of racism we have here and in the US is that here the element of fear is absent, whereas in US there is this element of fear and anger attached to the racism.

Hi all fellow travellers :-)
Venkat, Jasjit & All my friends:
I came across this a while back and thought I'd share with you guys. Its quite saddenning.
===================
This is an excerpt from a letter that was originally published Nov. 21, 2004, in the blog Kevin Sites (a Journalist) maintained while he was reporting for television networks. It is addressed to the unit he was accompanying when he videotaped a U.S. Marine shooting a wounded Iraqi insurgent in a Fallujah mosque. The broadcast of that videotape on NBC News brought Sites both praise and scorn.
------
...
...
... We hear gunshots coming from what seems to be inside the mosque. A Marine from my squad yells, "Are there Marines in here?"
When we arrive at the front entrance we see that another squad has entered before us.
The lieutenant asks them, "Are there people inside?"
One of the Marines raises his hand signaling five.
"Did you shoot them?" the lieutenant asks.
"Roger that, sir," the Marine responds.
"Were they armed?" The Marine just shrugs and we all move inside.
Immediately after entering the mosque, I see black plastic body bags spread around; they are the same dead from the day before. But more surprising, I also see the same five men who were wounded from Friday. It appears that one of them is now dead and three are bleeding to death from new gunshot wounds. The fifth is partially covered by a blanket near the same column and in the same condition as on Friday. He has not been shot again. I look closely at both the dead and the wounded. There don't appear to be any weapons anywhere.
"These were the same wounded from yesterday," I say to the lieutenant. He takes a look around and goes outside the mosque with his radio operator to call the situation in to Battalion Forward Headquarters.
I see an old man in a red kaffiyeh (a cloth headdress fastened by a band around the crown) lying against the back wall. Another man is face down next to him, his hand on the old man's lap as if he were trying to take cover. I squat beside them, inches away and begin to videotape them. Then I notice that the blood coming from the old man's nose is bubbling, a sign he is still breathing. So is the man next to him.
While I continue to tape, a Marine walks to the other two bodies about 15 feet away against the same back wall.
Then I hear him say this about one of the men:
"He's ******* faking he's dead. He's faking he's ******* dead."
Through my viewfinder I can see the Marine raise the muzzle of his rifle in the direction of the wounded Iraqi. There are no sudden movements, no reaching or lunging. However, the Marine could legitimately believe the man poses some kind of danger. Maybe he's going to cover him while another Marine searches for weapons.
Instead, he pulls the trigger. There is a small splatter against the back wall and the man's leg slumps down.
"Well he's dead now," says another Marine in the background.
.....
...

IF YOU yelled for 8 years, 7 months and 6 days you would have produced enough sound energy to heat one cup of coffee.
(Hardly seems worth it.)
If you farted consistently for 6 years and 9 months, enough gas is produced to create the energy of an atomic bomb.
(Now that's more like it!)
The human heart creates enough pressure when it pumps out to the body to squirt blood 30 feet.
(O.M.G.!)
A pig's orgasm lasts 30 minutes.
(In my next life, I want to be a pig.)
A cockroach will live nine days without its head before it starves to death. (Creepy.)
(I'm still not over the pig.)
Banging your head against a wall uses 150 calories a hour
(Don't try this at home, maybe at work)
The male praying mantis cannot copulate while its head is attached to its body. The female initiates sex by ripping the male's head off.
("Honey, I'm home. What the....?!")
The flea can jump 350 times its body length. It's like a human jumping the length of a football field.
(30 minutes..lucky pig! Can you imagine?)
The catfish has over 27,000 taste buds.
(What could be so tasty on the bottom of a pond?)
Some lions mate over 50 times a day.
(I still want to be a pig in my next life...quality over quantity)
Butterflies taste with their feet.
(Something I always wanted to know.)
The strongest muscle in the body is the tongue.
(Hmmmmmm......)
Right-handed people live, on average, nine years longer than left-handed people.
(If you're ambidextrous, do you split the difference?)
Elephants are the only animals that cannot jump.
(okay, so that would be a good thing)
A cat's urine glows under a black light.
(I wonder who was paid to figure that out?)
An ostrich's eye is bigger than its brain.
(I know some people like that.)
Starfish have no brains
(I know some people like that too.)
Polar bears are left-handed.

Dear Anusheh :)
The blog website server is "one hour ahead of real time" - due to the Daylight Savings Time (DST) (called "Summer Time" in many places) is to make better use of daylight (mostly observed in US & European Union among other places above the equator). During the summer months, ppl chg their clocks to move an hr of daylight from the morning to the evening.
About the changes due to DST:
"If you live near the equator, day and night are nearly the same length (12 hours). But elsewhere on Earth, there is much more daylight in the summer than in the winter. Thus, DST is usually not helpful in the tropics, and countries near the equator generally do not change their clocks (like India)."
How the dates change at various places:
Daylight Saving Time begins for most of the United States at 2:00 a.m. on the first Sunday of April [hence 2 April for the website - because its hosted on a US server ;-)]. Time reverts to standard time at 2:00 a.m. on the last Sunday of October. In the U.S., each time zone switches at a different time.
In the European Union, Summer Time begins and ends at 1:00 a.m. Universal Time (Greenwich Mean Time). It begins the last Sunday in March and ends the last Sunday in October. In the EU, all time zones change at the same moment.
So in 2006 DST will be observed from April 2 to October 29 in US and from March 26 - October 29 in European union.
Lots of love,
Surya :)

HEY everyone!!!!!
I am extremely sorry about the brief hiatus. Got busy with some stuff. And of course, missed out on a lot here. It will take me a while to go through all of this. Just a little busy for another day or so. But I shall write soon!
A warm HI to Jasjit, Anusheh, Chaitali, Aachi, Madhavi, Harvinder, Annie, Prasun, Radhika, Venkat, Surya, Harb and everyone else. And a warm welcome to all the new buddies on the blog!
Love to all :-)

Looking fwd to a bright day :)

Good Morning Surya
Shubhosree is involved with some other stuff so she will no longer have time to write and is therefore not on the authors list any longer.
The blog is indeed an interesting river which flows bringing in new currents and waves, leaving behind some, finding others anew. :-)

Hi Shubhosree! Good to see you back from Hiatus :)
Hiiiiiii Surya,
Wow that was a long hibernation Bondhu! But good to have you back. And thanks friend for the explaination on the time change. We had thought that we had transcended into the future :)like one of those scarry science fiction movies were 'man creates computer and computer takes over the earth and humankind !)
Thanks for the wish! I had a quite B'day with my family (God I sound like those interviews that stars give in the magazines when enquired about how they spent their B'days ;) )and lots of phone wishes and e-mails from my friends.

Dear Chaitali, (sorry am replying a li'l late)
About the wishes - You're most welcome :).
I'll always have the best ones for you guys here :)
About hibernation - well it was - kind of. Had to finish somethings really important. [and all the while I knew I can always get back on the 'bus' at any time :)].
And now I'm religiously going back and read through each piece / share / comments that I've missed out while I was away - am taking my time enjoying each of them though.
You remind me of my cousin who's quite like you - spontaneous, knowledgeable, talking of Science fiction movies [don't know abt u ... but she used to like those long back] :)
Strange how some things lead one to relating different ppl.
Good to see & know people :)

I would like to see 'comment notification by e-mail in this blog(in fact, in all the blogs) as it can make it possible to keep track of a discussion.
So, it's a must have feature which i have seen in very rare blogs.
Cheers, Rohit
