A friend in foreign

By Aachi Mithin - 6:52 PM Thursday 07 December 2006

It is the winter. Time to catch up a friendship I found in a foreign land...long ago.

It was in the winter of 2003 that I found myself in freezing climate of good old England. I had gone to my cousin's place in Standish, a little north of Liverpool. His house was located amongst the hills and overlooked the motorway.

It was my first trip to a foreign land. I felt lonely. I felt like a stranger in an unknown land.

I would spy a few people going round that small little village waving their hands in greeting. I would smile back. But for a known face, everything else is perfect here I thought.

And then I saw him. Just like I used to see him in the backyard of my house. Smiling as ever and filling with warmth he removed from my veins every feeling of chill and loneliness of a the Englsish winter. He would last for some hours only, sometimes much less, but whenever he came out my face would light up in smiles and I would greet him with warmth.

My best friend, everyone's best friend. Shining beautifully in the infinite sky like he did over my terrace.

The sun.

I am still on Earth, I realised. The sun that shone here was also the same one which lighted my colony every morning. The birds that sang to it were as much in love with it as the bulbuls of my country. People here too shielded their eyes from Him like they did in my country...

And suddenly iI didnt feel lonely anymore...I had found a friend from back home...my best friend.

It never failed to rise, never failed to light me up in its warmth. If i spent a chilly night in tears it would be there caressing my skin softly and asuring me of a new tomorrow.

As long as I am on Earth...I would forever be indebted to this wonderful friend of mine for filling my life and others' also with warmth and love.

'We all live under the same sun, we all look up at the same moon...then why cant we live as one?'
---The Scorpions
' Sunshine....
on my shoulders makes me happy.

sunshine....
in my eyes makes me cry.

sunshine....
in the waters is so lovely.

sunshine....
almost always makes me high.

if i had a day
i could give to u
i would certainly give
to u today.

if i had a song
i could sing for u
i would sing this song today.

if i had a tale
i could tell u...
i would tell a tale
that would make u smile....

if i had a wish
i could wish for u...
i would wish for a
life , with sunshine all the time....

sunshine....
make me happy....

sunshine....
make me cry....

sunshine....
u look so lovely....

sunshine....
make me high all the while....'
-----------John Denver, Greatest Hits.

whenever in doubt or despair...go out and stretch ur arms and look up into the sky...let sunshine play on ur face...love that warmth...and i guarantee...sunshine almost always will make u high....

lots of love

p.s. it sustains life.it sustains u. it will make u happy.it will make u cry.it will burn for u all the while....

Hi Aachi,

We realize how important the sun is to us mostly in winters :) When I go out on my balcony in the early morning the sun shines on my face with its golden glow. Immediately one feels energetic and ready to start the day.

I love watching the birds all lined up on a wire in the evening and all looking at the direction of the setting sun. It is such a wonderful sight as if they are saying thank you to the sun and bidding it goodbye for the night and wishing the sun 'See you tomorrow.' They do it irrespective of summer, winter.

We are all very busy at IFSHA. We are in the middle of a healing programme. Your post has made the day refreshing and given it a great start! Thanks friend!

Dear Aachi

Another endearing post. I love this John Denver song and thanks for bringing it to my mind again, especially in these cold wintry days when the sun is being elusive.

lots of love

Dear Chaitali, Anusheh,

There was a time when i never missed a sunset on top of my terrace. But slowly as life became more demanding I lost sight of the little joys i used to have.

One of my all time fantasies is to visit a planet in the centre of our own galaxy. As you know the density of stars is more towards the centre...there too a inhabited planet will be having more than one sun...it can be a binary or a triple system or much more.

I yearn to feel what that sight would look like...seeing more than one sun setting in the horizon...

a sight probably the most beautiful imaginable in this spectacular universe that we live in.

lots of love to you
